Simple Summer Skincare: Natural Routines for Glowing Skin (Sun & After-Sun Too)
Share
As someone with very sensitive skin that burns easily and needs a little extra care, summer has always been something I have had to be mindful of. When I was younger, growing up in Florida, I spent a little too much time out in the sun one day and ended up with sun poisoning. It was not a great experience, and it is something I have never forgotten. Since then, I have been much more careful about how I care for my skin, especially during the warmer months.
Summer is just around the corner, the days grow longer, the evenings feel warm, and with more time spent outdoors, taking extra care of your skin becomes so important.
All that sunshine, sweat, salt water, and heat can take a toll on your skin though. The good news is you do not need a complicated routine or a shelf full of products to keep your skin comfortable. A few simple, natural choices can make a noticeable difference.
Here is an easy, natural way to care for your skin this summer, from morning through evening.
Start with a gentle cleanse.
In the summer your skin naturally produces more oil and sweat, but that does not mean you need anything harsh. Stripping your skin can actually trigger it to produce even more oil, which works against you. A gentle, fragrance free soap made with nourishing ingredients like goat milk, olive oil, and botanicals is a better option. A cold process bar without synthetic fragrance works well for both face and body, especially if your skin tends to get sensitive in the heat. Washing morning and night with a simple, unscented bar helps support your skin barrier instead of disrupting it.
Keep things simple during the day.
Summer skincare does not have to be complicated. A mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide sits on top of your skin rather than absorbing into it, which makes it a good choice for sensitive skin. A small spray of rose water or aloe vera can feel refreshing throughout the day. Lip balm with SPF is easy to forget, but worth keeping nearby. What you eat and drink matters too, hydration shows up on your skin. Herbal teas, water with cucumber or mint, and foods like watermelon can all help support your skin from the inside.
Take care of your skin after the sun.
This step often gets overlooked, but it can make the biggest difference. Whether you spent the day at the beach, in the garden, or just out running errands, your skin needs time to recover. Start by cleansing gently, rinsing away sunscreen, sweat, chlorine, or salt water with a mild soap. At this point your skin is already a little stressed, so it helps to avoid synthetic fragrance. Ingredients like calendula are especially nice here, as they have long been used to soothe irritated skin.
Next, cool things down. A cool rinse or a damp cloth on warm skin feels soothing and can help calm inflammation. Aloe vera gel, especially when kept in the fridge, is a simple summer staple for a reason.
Moisturize while your skin is still slightly damp to help lock in hydration. Simple options like shea butter, jojoba oil, which is what I personally use, or a lightweight lotion with minimal ingredients tend to work best. When skin is stressed, fewer ingredients are often better.
In the evening, let your skin breathe. After a day in the sun, skipping heavy makeup gives your skin space to rest and recover overnight.
Know your ingredients.
When you are choosing natural skincare products, a few ingredients stand out for summer. Goat milk contains lactic acid, vitamins, and natural fats that gently nourish and exfoliate. Calendula is known for calming sensitive or sun stressed skin. Aloe vera cools and hydrates, shea butter deeply moisturizes, and lavender essential oil can be calming when used lightly.
A note on fragrance.
One of the simplest changes you can make for summer skin is going fragrance free. Synthetic fragrance is a common cause of irritation, and heat can make your skin more reactive. If your skin feels itchy, tight, or red during the summer, fragrance may be part of the problem. Fragrance free does not mean boring, it simply means your skin gets the benefit of the ingredients without unnecessary extras.
Less really is more.
A summer routine does not need to be complicated to be effective. A gentle cleanser, a mineral sunscreen, something soothing for after sun care, and a simple moisturizer are really all you need.
